2021 Fall Trip - Day 33 - 9/25/2021

Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 - Cool day driving around Arkansas, ending up over in Memphis, Tennessee - 418 miles driving today:

It was a leisurely drive up to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art:
They open at 10, and we were THE FIRST ONES IN:

Thomas Moran - "Valley of the Catawissa in Autumn", ca. 1862 oil:

Winslow Homer - "Milking Time", 1875 oil:

Frederic Edwin Church - "Home by the Lake", 1852 oil:

Asher B. Durand - "Kindred Spirits", 1849 oil:

Thomas Hill - "Yosemite Falls", 1884 oil:

Maya Lin - "Silver Upper White River", 2015 recycled silver:

Julie Mehretu - "Excerpt (suprematist evasion)", 2003 ink and acrylic:

The buildings and grounds are pretty cool:

Although Thorncrown Chapel is only 36 miles away, the winding roads make it an hour:
It is a wonderfully impressive place:
Even their "office building" is a fun design:

"Riding With My Posse":
I don't know why, but - literally - half of ALL THE MOTORCYCLES IN NORTH AMERICA are HERE is northwest Arkansas this weekend!!

Made my way down onto I-40 East:
Which took me all the way to the Mississippi River:
with Memphis, Tennessee on the other side:

I was here (first and last) in October 2018, and I saw Sun Studio (which was excellent) and Graceland (which was not). Upon leaving Memphis, I quickly realized that I had missed the Lorraine Motel , where Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated. So that was our first stop:
Not to be too gruesome/morbid, but maybe a future road-trip would include "the grassy knoll" in Dallas, and the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles (look them up).

We were able to do a quick drive-by of Sun Studio, at the corner of Union and Marshall:

It was wonderful seeing John and Dorsey:

What a Great Day! Thank you God for these wonderful adventures!

Music for today:

Keith Jarrett Trio - My Foolish Heart, 2007 live double album

Maeve - The Soul Felt It's Worth, 2010

Mark-Almond - Nightmusic, 1996

Marvin Gaye - Midnight Love (Legacy Edition), 1982

4 versions of "Sexual Healing" - great song, but maybe I don't need all 4 versions.

Michael Franti & Spearhead - All Rebel Rockers, 2008

Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More, 2009 debut album

Neil Young - All Night Long, 1992 double live album

Tracks 1 - 9: Europe 1986 (with band)
Tracks 10 - 15: The Bottom Line, NYC, May 16, 1974 (solo)

Patty Larkin - Live "In The Square", 1990 live album

Martin Luther King Jr. - A Call To Conscience, 2002 (7 cds)

Today, as we drove into Memphis, we listened to cd 7, which is his final speech April 3, 1968, addressing the striking black sanitation workers. Extremely Powerful Stuff, and wikipedia has an excellent entry under the "Assassination and aftermath" section on their Martin Luther King Jr. page.
