Fall 2015 - Day 7: Deming, NM - Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery, AZ - Univ of Arizona Museum of Art, AZ - Tucson Museum of Art, AZ - ASU Art Museum, AZ - Phoenix Art Museum, AZ - Wickenburg, AZ

Saturday, Sept 12, 2015 - starting from the Super 8 in Deming, NM, west 200 miles to the Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery (Tucson, AZ), then the Univ of Arizona Museum of Art and the Tucson Museum of Art (Tucson, AZ), northwest to the ASU Art Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum (Phoenix, AZ), then northwest to spend the night at the Super 8 in Wickenburg, AZ:

416 miles; 6 hours 47 minutes.

After the flatlands I have been through, the rock formations at this rest stop are pretty cool:

Arizona does not observe Day-Light Savings Time (they say they have enough daylight, and don't really need to "save" any). As a result, they are on Mountain Time for 6 months, then West Coast Time for the rest - right now, it is West Coast Time, so I set my clocks back again when I crossed the state line. It was hot in Tucson, and hit 100º at 11:43 AM (yes, I am using the air conditioning!).

On my trip last fall, at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art (Indianapolis, IN), I saw a beautiful painting by Santa Fe, New Mexico contemporary artist P.A. Nisbet - "Beneath the Blue Moon Bench", 2012. I checked out his website etc, and found that his works are sold by the Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery (Tucson, AZ), so I stopped by and had a very nice chat with Jerry Freund, who showed me some of Peter's work - CaƱon Del Sol

a lovely piece, but at $64,000, a bit out of my price range.

Jerry told me about one of Peter's major paintings that is at the Tucson Museum of Art (Sovereign Sky), so I stopped there after the University of Arizona Museum of Art, but the Nisbet was not on display.

Although the Univ of Arizona Museum of Art did not have the Morans or the Turner or the Whittredge I was hoping to see, they had a good Jackson Pollock - November 20, 1950, 1950:

and an excellent work by Giovanni Paolo Panini - A Capriccio of Classical Ruins, c. 1750:

100 miles up the road to the Arizona State University Art Museum (Tempe, AZ), which has a very nice American Collection. Highlights include:
Childe Hassam - Laurel in the Ledges, 1906

Winslow Homer - Corn Husking, 1874

The Phoenix Art Museum was the highpoint of today's trip - (only a few) highlights include
Thomas Moran - Zoroaster Temple at Sunset, 1916

Sanford Robinson Gifford - Evening Shower, 1862

Thomas Hill - El Capitan and Bridal Veil Falls, Yosemite Valley, not dated

A stunning painting by an artist I do not know
Hamilton Hamilton - Trout Lake, Colorado, 1879

I am surprised how well Maxfield Parrish's style fits-in with the raw craggy mountains I have seen.
Maxfield Parrish - Arizona, 1950

In Phoenix, the temperature peaked at 109º at 3:03 PM ("but it's a dry heat"), and didn't start going down until 5:13.

Another stunning Arizona Sunset!
