Monday, Sept 7, 2015 - starting from the Super 8 in Harrisonburg, VA down to the Hunter Museum of American Art (Chattanooga, TN), then spend the night up at the Super 8 in Murfreesboro, TN:
613 miles; 9 hours 42 minutes.
The map shows that I had intended to go to the Space Needle in Gatlinburg, TN - it is supposed to have a fabulous view of the Great Smoky Mountains. Unfortunately, as I was driving down the road to Gatlinburg, the two lanes on the other side were PACKED with cars - looked like "Escape From The Cape" on Monday of Labor Day Weekend - oh, wait, it is "Monday-of-Labor-Day-Weekend, and the Great Smoky Mountains are these people's "Cape Cod and the Islands". So I did a u-turn and joined the crowd - it worked out fine, getting to the Museum at 4.
Since I started at 8, and got to the Museum at 4, that's 8 hours driving (with stops) - that's quite a long haul, even for me.
A lot of police cars and motorcycles were out on the highway, and Virginia also has these signs: Speed Limit Enforced By Aircraft:
I can understand "Monitored By Aircraft", but "Enforced"? It made me think of a New Yorker cartoon I-just-made-up, using a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest:
With 16 of "my artists", the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN has been high on my list. It did not disappoint. They also had an Exhibition - "Monet and American Impressionism"; it turns out this is the same exhibit I saw in Gainesville, Florida last February! and it enabled me to track down another Monet in this country - Champ d'avoine, 1890, which was on loan from the Harn Museum of Art, Univ. of Florida, Gainesville, FL:
the modern structure houses the exhibitions
while the original mansion houses the collections
And they have a lovely collection! Highlights include a very large Asher B. Durand - A Symbol, 1856
William Trost Richards - The Lion Rock, Kynance Cove, South Cornwall, 1885
Sanford Robinson Gifford - A Home in the Wilderness, c. 1867
and there were a wonderful pair of stained-glass pieces by John LaFarge
Autumn, c. 1896
Spring, c. 1896
and on display were other works by Winslow Homer, N.C. Wyeth, Dale Chihuly, Edward Moran, Alfred Jacob Miller, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Robert S. Duncanson, Alfred Thompson Bricher, and John Kensett.
The porch has a great view of the Tennessee River:
And, of course I had to mail Ellie's postcards from the Post Office in Manchester, TN!!
I figured I might as well fill up the car
and go for a little drive around the country!
After setting the clock in the car back one hour, I got to the Super 8 in Murfreesboro, TN in time for a dip in the pool
and went to a sports bar for pulled-pork sandwich and the Ohio State-Virginia Tech game!
I finished the day driving 605 miles. Wow de Wow de Wow - Thank you, God, for a great day!

Gloria by U2 starts off what-may-be-the-best-live-album-ever-made (at least, that's my opinion)
Marvin Gaye has been described as both the most religious artist and the most sexual artist in music. Fun to think about making that work.
Going Mobile by the Who:
Out in the woods
Or in the city
It's all the same to me
When I'm drivin' free, the world's my home
When I'm mobile
Greenback Boogie by Ima Robot is the theme song for Suits, one of our favorite shows
and Miranda sounds great out on the road - since I'm in the South, she gets some album-time tomorrow.
Yay - I like your "New Yorker" cartoon ! : )
