Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023 - Time to put Bishop, California in my rear-view mirror, and head north:
I left The Hostel California at 6:30 AM. My first stop, 50 miles and 50 minutes later, was from page 457 of my "Guide to Scenic Highways & Byways": June Lake Loop:
Back on the highway, it is good to see that Some People have their priorities straight:
By 11:30 it was time to visit quaint, folksy South Lake Tahoe - well, maybe not so quaint or folksy, with the casinos and Hard Rock Cafe:
Pretty Views going up around the west side of Lake Tahoe:
I was going to stop at "Inspiration Point", but it was just too crowded (on a Tuesday afternoon):
Lake Tahoe dominates every aspect of life out here:
As I headed north alongside the Truckee River, I saw a hawk come down and get a fish:
I made my way out to the Donner Memorial State Museum:
where they had a great picture of a picture in their collection - Albert Bierstadt - "Donner Lake from the Summit", 1873 oil. The painting itself was not available to see:
I then headed down and visited a handful of towns along the north side of Lake Tahoe - Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach, Crystal Bay, Incline Village:
I made it as far south as Sand Harbor Beach, but I said no when they wanted $15 for parking:
A final goodbye to Lake Tahoe:
Up and over some mountains, and I made it to the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Nevada at 5:30 (they close at 6):
Unfortunately, the two most-interesting things in The Museum are the hangings in the stairwell:
and the workmen installing new artwork:
I said goodbye to Reno:
I said hello to a beautiful sky (and some Post Offices):
and at 6 PM checked into the Super 8 in Fernley, Nevada:
I drove 389 miles in 11-and-1/2 hours - Thank you God for this wonderful Adventure Day! Good to get back out on The Road.
OH - I saw 21 Post Offices today:
My favorite was 95728 - Soda Springs, CA:
Music for today - just what is on my mind:
Neil Young - Are You Passionate?, 2002:
Jackson Browne - Running On Empty, 1977 live album:
and of course, lyrics to the Title Song:
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
...
'69, I was 21 and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned into the road I'm on
---------------------------------
And now it's time for Northern California (San Francisco) bands:
Quicksilver Messenger Service - Quicksilver Messenger Service, 1968 debut album:
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow, 1967 debut album - of course they would call their 1st album "Surrealistic Pillow":
Grateful Dead - American Beauty, 1970:
Dead and Company - 2017/06/18 Boston, MA, well, yes, I WAS THERE:
---------------------------------
Then it was time to follow my train-of-thought:
David Bowie - Pin Ups, 1973 - he did "Shapes of Things" from The Yardbirds:
The Yardbirds - Yardbirds Greatest Hits, 1967 greatest hits album (I owned this album) - Jeff Beck was lead guitar on "Shape of Things", "Over Under Sideways Down", "I'm a Man", Happenings Ten Years Time Ago", "Heart Full of Soul":
Jeff Beck - Truth, 1968 debut album - introducing Rod Stewart on vocals:
Rod Stewart - Never A Dull Moment, 1972 - Ronnie Wood on lead guitar:
The Rolling Stones - Black and Blue, 1976 - Ronnie Wood became a temporary touring member of the Stones in 1975 and official member in 1976:
The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street, 1972 double album - excellent straight rock 'n roll:
