Day Five: Colorado: Sterling - Castle Rock - Garden of the Gods - Leadville

When I came over the bridge Sunday night in Sterling, people were on the bridge, watching the Platte River which runs north just east of town. It was forecast to crest that evening.

The first thing I wanted to do Monday is get up on the bridge and check out the water. Unfortunately, the bridge was closed - and the water was turned off in the Super 8, and the bathrooms were shut down in the county. Time to head South.

Down to Denver, then south on 25, and I saw Castle Rock looming on the horizon. Got a cup of coffee at McDonald's, and decided to warm up my hiking legs - Castle Rock was a very nice place:

None of the museums are open Monday, so I went to the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. I love "lunch with a view":

Paths wind through fabulous rock formations - huge, weathered, red

Southern Colorado was not hit with the huge storms that hit Estes Park and Northern Colorado, but there still is enough flooding in some areas that resulting in smaller road closures. The road to Leadville (US 24) is certainly beautiful:

Last note for the day: I wanted dinner and to be able to watch the football game.
The restaurant with the best tvs closed their kitchen at 6:00
The restaurant with the best food has no tv
and the bar has both food and tv, but no tv sound

I choose the good food.
