August 2017 - Day 13 (northeast into Yellowstone)

Wednesday, August 16, 2017 - back into Wyoming - Yellowstone National Park - 328 miles altogether:

The reason to go to Rexburg, Idaho is they supply potatoes for Five Guys french fries:

Unfortunately, I was not able to locate the Jeppesen farm. Nice thought, though.

So then a quick stop at The Three Tetons Historical Marker:

I drove on Fishermans Drive - the river was beautiful:

but the road definitely needed some work:

I wanted to see Lower Mesa Falls and Upper Mesa Falls. Lower Mesa Falls are only viewable from a great distance, but you can get up-close-and-personal with Upper Mesa Falls:

downstream from the Falls is Henrys Fork of the Snake River:

Zipped into Montana (mailed Ellie a postcard from West Yellowstone, MT), then into Yellowstone National Park:

Although there was bad traffic to get into the Park, it quickly dissipated. The Park is as lovely as always:

I wanted to see Tower Fall, which had been painted by Thomas Moran:

It drains into the Yellowstone River:

I then made my way up to the Yellowstone Heritage and Research Center, which is just outside the north entrance to the Park. They have an exceptional collection of Thomas Moran watercolors, and the only time they offer tours is Wednesdays at 2 PM (I had made my reservation on April 13, 2017!):

They had an excellent map of the 1871 Hayden Expedition:

It turns out that the other 10 people did not show up, so I got a personal, individual tour!!! Um, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but the facility deals with a whole lot more than "Thomas Moran art" - archeology, ecology, geology, sociology of the people in the park (hotel workers, tourists), etc. Having said that, the Moran art was GREAT! Since they don't photograph well:

The two best pieces were (images from their on-line website):

(Canyon Walls), 1871 watercolor

East Wall of the Canyon from Inspiration Point, 1892 watercolor

I was meeting Deede and Tad down in Jackson for dinner at the Snake River Brewery (which is also a restaurant), so I had to book-it back through the Park. It was LOVELY:

And sunset behind The Tetons was spectacular!!!:

The Elk Refuge Inn is a really nice place:

I forgot to take a picture of Deede and Tad, but THEY WERE THERE (along with a GREAT bacon-cheeseburger!). Thank you God for this wonderful adventure-and-art day!

Music for today was albums from my purple nano:

Bill Morrissey - "Picnic" from The SilverWolf Homeless Project, 1995

The Doors - The Soft Parade, 1969

Jackson Browne - Solo Acoustic, Vol. 2, 2008

Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane, 2002

Graham Nash - Songs for Beginners, 1971 first solo album

Ben Folds - Songs for Silverman, 2005

Frank Sinatra - Songs for Swingin' Lovers!, 1956

Aaron Espe - Songs From A Small Town, 2008

various artists - Songs from Dawson's Creek, 2009 soundtrack

various artists - Songs from the Material World: A Tribute to George Harrison, 2003

Hothouse Flowers - Songs From The Rain, 2010

Billy Joel - Songs in the Attic, 1981 live album

I listened to this twice, and he does a killer version of "Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)":

You know those lights were bright on Broadway
That was so many years ago
Before we all lived here in Florida
Before the Mafia took over Mexico
There are not many who remember
They say a handful still survive
To tell the world about
The way the lights went out
And keep the memory alive
