Thursday, Oct 8, 2015 - Starting from Madison, Wisconsin, southeast to the Block Museum of Art (Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL), then south to the Art Institute of Chicago, then south/east to the Snite Museum of Art (Univ. of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN), then north to the Days Inn, Holland, MI:
4 states - 362 actual miles; on the road for 10 hours, plus lost another hour in Indiana Time Zone change
Hey, if you're doing to pull off this "road warrior" thing, you better have reliable wi-fi, good coffee, and some food:
Although Northwestern University has some awesome architecture,
and a beautiful view (on Lake Michigan, with Chicago in the distance),
their Block Museum of Art is disappointing - plenty of space, but devoted to "blank space" and unattractive exhibitions:
LET's GO FIND SOME BEAUTY! 13.5 miles south is the Art Institute of Chicago! I was here 2 years ago on my first trip west, and although I certainly appreciated the art, I think I was more consumed with "the adventure of the trip" (it was Day 3 of my first dixonheadingwest). This time around, I found the art STUNNING! I tried to text Wendy in the museum, but there was no service; my text would have said "WOW - Canaletto, Monet, Turner! and I have not even found the American Art Wing yet!"
Canaletto - Title Page, from Vedute, 1735/44
Claude Monet - Cliff Walk at Pourville, 1882
and 2 J.M.W. Turner paintings that I LOVE:
Valley of Aosta: Snowstorm, Avalanche, and Thunderstorm, 1836/37
Fishing Boats with Hucksters Bargaining for Fish, 1837/38
American Art highlights include:
Frederic Edwin Church - View of Cotopaxi, 1857
Winslow Homer - The Herring Net, 1885
Sanford Robinson Gifford - Kauterskill Clove, Catskill Mountains, 1880
and Edward Hopper's iconic - Nighthawks, 1942
Please note - there are many many more photos that I took, plus other pieces of art that many other people love here at the Art Institute of Chicago. It is certainly a worthwhile destination point for any traveler!
Say goodbye to Soldier Field and Chicago:
It hit 82º on my drive into Indiana, and I got to the Snite Museum of Art at the Univ. of Notre Dame at 4:50 (5 PM closing). But I was able to see (and enjoy):
Albert Bierstadt - Bernese Alps, 1859
William Morris Hunt - The Temple of Vesta, Tivoli
Thomas Moran - Rio Virgin Canyon - Utah, 1916
And I was invited to stay for another Artists Reception after the Museum closed!
I must look Mature ... or Important ... or Something ...
Notre Dame is certainly a Beautiful College Campus:
1 1/2 hours north (crossed another State Line) to the Days Inn in Holland, Michigan (more about that location tomorrow) - Thank you God for another great day!

As the riders loped on by him he heard one call his name
'if you wanna save your soul from hell a-ridin on our range
Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride
Tryin to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies
and the Louisiana Gator Boys:
