Fall 2015 - Day 30: Super 8 (Calgary, Alberta) - Super 8 (Brandon, Manitoba)

Monday, Oct 5, 2015 - Starting from the Super 8 in Calgary, Alberta, drop Wendy off at the Calgary Airport, then east 690 miles on Hwy 1 to the Super 8 in Brandon, Manitoba:

740 actual miles; 11 hours driving (plus lost an hour with Time Zone change from Mountain Time to Central Time)

"So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore"

It is a little early in the blog to mention the music, but today I listened to 8 versions of Thunder Road (1 studio, 7 live), so I shall be quoting liberally throughout. And, as a rejoinder, YES, we are still "that young anymore"!!

85 miles east - fog, 34º

116 miles east: The wide-open spaces of eastern Alberta were touched with frost (30º at 9:30 AM):

Don't worry - Hwy 1 is a PAVED ROAD - this is just a "scenic turnoff".

I think Canada is very conflicted about their use of signage:

I know for a fact that those animals ARE NOT ELK:

234 miles east (just outside Medicine Gap) - 47º blazing sunshine, not a cloud in the sky

"These two lanes will take us anywhere":

"Heaven's waiting on down the tracks"

Just saw a coyote by the highway (and another later in the day).

"They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets":

Wendy likes watching HGTV - we saw a show "Off The Grid". I found 3 perfect choices:

I don't care that it is 46º outside - I'm going to
"roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair"

Cool - I'm going to make it home in NO TIME!

WOW - Herbert, Saskatchewan sure has A LOT GOING ON:

let's see:

Diesel fuel
Food
Lodging
Hospital
Pharmacy
Bank
Parking for Camper (?)
Swimming
Information kiosk
Grocery store
Library
Public Telephone

That sure beats a sign I saw for another town - below the Town Name it only said "No Services".

There is a HUGE wetlands area east of Herbert - which Wikipedia tells me is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. There were tons of birds! (NOTE: taking pictures of birds while driving on a highway DOES NOT result in ANY good pictures of said birds).

I spent 1/2 hour in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan - gas fill-up, post card buy-write-mail, and at Tim Horton's getting a medium-size black original coffee.

Is this where he retired?

sorry, no Moby Dick today.

The landscape is ablaze in the setting sun:

time to settle in with a pizza and Monday Night Football, at one of my FREE nights at a Super 8:

Excellent Road Trip - Thank you GOD for such a super day, and for the beauty of this world!

Music today was back to alphabetical songs; 127 songs, beginning with "T"

Thrasher 1979 Neil Young & Crazy Horse Rust Never Sleeps [Live]
and ending with
Time To Go Home 2006 Michael Franti & Spearhead Yell Fire!

The list can be accessed here

Highlights include:

Thrasher 1979 Neil Young & Crazy Horse Rust Never Sleeps [Live]
Neil uses images of grain harvesters "more than three lanes wide", which he knew from his childhood in Manitoba. I saw some today.

And I was just getting up,
hit the road before it's light
Trying to catch an hour on the sun

Headed out to where the pavement
turns to sand
With a one-way ticket
to the land of truth
And my suitcase in my hand

On an asphalt highway bending
Thru libraries and museums,

wow - I guess you can see why it is one of my favorite songs.

Three Marlenas 1996 The Wallflowers Bringing Down The Horse

Man, I think I'm gonna buy myself a Rolls
Maybe a Chevrolet
One where I can pull that top down
Just let my radio play
Now I'm headin' out on that highway
I'm goin' right out of state

3 different songs titled "The Thrill Is Gone" - by B.B. King, by Julie London, and by The Waterboys

Thumbelina 1982 The Pretenders Learning To Crawl

Look out the window and count the sheep
That dot the hillsides and the fields of wheat
Across america as we cross america
What's important here today
The broken line on the highway

Ticket To Ride 1965 The Beatles Help! [Capitol Album]

Ticking 1974 Elton John Caribou

4 different songs titled "Time After Time" - Benny Green, Crosby & Nash, Cyndi Lauper, Keith Jarrett
(I don't usually get to hear Crosby & Nash followed by Cyndi Lauper followed by Keith Jarrett).

Time And Time Again 1993 Counting Crows August And Everything After (deluxe edition)
Time And Time Again (live) 1994 Counting Crows August And Everything After (deluxe edition, Live in Paris)

I wish I was traveling
on a freeway
Beneath this graveyard western sky

although I didn't see them do this at their shows, it was cool listening to it while driving. Reminds me of their album cover:

Time Has Come Today 1967 The Chambers Brothers The Time Has Come

This song was VERY cutting edge/progressive/ROCKING when it came out (and still sounds great)(long/album version 11:07)

Time Stand Still 1987 Rush Retrospective II 1981-1987
Rush is a Canadian band.

Time To Go Home 1993 Bill Morrissey Night Train

The songs of Bill Morrissey always make me cry, and almost always in a good way. With his music, his words, and his voice, Bill had a way of cutting to the heart of the matter, and bringing out what was real. An excellent work-of-love (Songs of Bill Morrissey - The Complete Songbook can be accessed here
