Crossover Blog (1/2) - Colby College Museum of Art

Sunday, July 17, 2022 - I'm hiking up in Northern Maine tomorrow, but today I'm visiting the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine. That allows me to write one of my favorite type of blogs: The Cross-Over Blog (modeled on the age-old tradition of comic book heros "crossing over" into each other's comic for an issue, then flip-flopping. Today is DixonHeadingWest (dealing with Art), and tomorrow is DixonHeadingNorth (dealing with hiking in this part of the world). This afternoon's drive:

Great start at Singing Beach this morning:
After church, lunch at home, then 3 hours up the road to Colby College Museum of Art:

In addition to their regular Excellent Collection, they have an Exhibition: Andrew Wyeth: Life and Death
I didn't like it - too morbid, too much "ghosts of reality", too many drawings. It is for a "real fan" only.

My favorites from their Permanent Collection:

Thomas Moran - "Morning, Outskirts of Venice", 1907 oil:

John Singer Sargent - "Rosina", 1878 oil:

Thomas Moran - "Acoma", 1902 oil:

Richard Estes - "Columbus Circle at Night", 2010 oil

Winslow Homer - "Girl in a Hammock", 1873 oil:

Frederic Edwin Church - "View from Olana in the Snow", c. 1871 oil:

Joseph Mozier - "Undine", c. 1866 marble

Winslow Homer - "The Trapper", 1870 oil:

Virgil Williams - "View of Katahdin from the West Branch of the Penobscot River", 1870 oil
Which is where I'll be tomorrow!

I left there a little before 5, and was up in Millinocket, Maine by 7 PM:

Well didn't that work out GREAT! Thank you God!

Music for today:

Brian McKnight - Back at One, 1999 fifth studio album
Excellent smooth soul.

Leonard Cohen - The Future, 1992 ninth studio album

Joe Jackson - Fast Forward, 2015 19th studio album

Joe Jackson - Tucker (soundtrack), 1988 ninth studio album
This is a bunch of 20's and 30's riffs, and can be deleted.

Joe Jackson - Mike's Murder, 1983 soundtrack album
Ok - I wanted to redeam Joe Jackson, and his soundtrack work. This is a wonderful album, recorded right after "Night and Day", but short (only 5 songs). And it is fairly obscure. I had the original record.

Joe Satriani, Yngwie J. Malmsteen & Steve Vai - G3 Live Rockin' In The Free World (cd 1), recorded 2003, released 2004
This cd will be deleted because is is just one loud guitar jam after another, and I don't know the original songs. Too many "Guitar Heros". HOWEVER, cd 2 is a definite keeper - 3 songs:

1 - "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" - 10:46
2 - "Little Wing" - 6:08
3 - "Rockin' in the Free World" (Neil Young) - 12:29.
