Oct. 27, 2013 - "Assign a Place" to photos

After my trip, I have a ton of photos on my laptop, and I would like to be able to map them. I'm using iPhoto on a MacBook Pro, so open iPhoto and go to iPhoto>Preferences. In the middle, make sure that Automatically is selected for Look up Places:


Close the Preferences window. While browsing the photos, click the Info button at the bottom of the screen. Select the photos you want to assign to a single location (holding down the Shift key will select continuous photos; holding down the Command key will allow you to select discontinuous photos one-by-one). On Sunday, Oct. 6 I went to the 8 AM Service at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbus, Ohio and I love their stained glass window - I selected all the photos associated with Trinity Episcopal Church.


Click in the lower-right map window where it says "Assign a Place...", then type Trinity Episcopal Church, Columbus, OH, and then click the blue highlighted choice


and a map appears with a pushpin for the location for those photos


NOTE: be sure to select the suggested option under "Google Results". I don't know where the results above the Google Results section come from, but it seems it is only good to the city-level. if that is good enough for you, then that's fine.

In iPhoto, click Places in the LIBRARY section, and see all the places to which you have located-your photos


Click on the Dayton pushpin to get its infolabel


then click on the callout button (>) to get to all 30 items I have associated with that place


Wendy & Deede news: They have successfully completed the Camino de Santiago! Wendy has stayed in Santiago R-and-R and to sightsee, and Deede walked to the Atlantic Ocean. They're coming home Thursday evening.

Day Twenty-Eight: Allentown, PA - Thomas Cole Historic Site - Frederic Edwin Church home (Olana State Historic Site) - Manchester-by-the-Sea!!!

At the Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill, NY I saw a deer


and he even posed for a close shot


Thomas Cole's house is lovely, and on a clear sunny day the view is magnificent


but they do not allow any photography in the interior. So here is a screenshot of their website/Bierstadt exhibit (to which I GOT A PRIVATE SCREENING!!!)

In a single room there were 11 paintings by Albert Bierstadt, and 6 of them were from Private Collections. What a privilege it was to view them!

Across the Hudson River, "Olana" was built by Frederic Edwin Church on a hill with vast views. The house is "not my style"


but the views certainly are!!


The Olana State Historic Site has the same "no photographs inside" policy. I can only imagine that they are still figuring out how to handle/deal with digital images of art - maybe I can communicate to them what I have discovered - that the only way "to see" art is to go to the location and see it. Digital images can only encourage people to "make the journey" (that's what I did!)

After all my travels (as a friend said, it was great seeing the country but not having to do the driving), New England/Massachusetts is really quite beautiful


but I am not happy to see that "rush hour traffic" still happens:


I told Ellie I would be home around 7. I arrived at 7:02 PM, 400.0 miles today, 10,467 miles for the 28-day trip! Thanks for coming on this adventure with me.

Day Twenty-Seven: Wheeling, WV - Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh - Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art - Gettysburg National Military Park - Allentown, PA

I saw a billboard - If something is advertised as "The Essence Of Britain", why would it be also advertised as being "Made in Switzerland"?


The Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh consist of both a Natural History Museum and a Museum of Art. The Art Museum has a very nice collection:

an Asher Durand,
a Martin Johnson Heade,
a Winslow Homer,
a John Kensett,
a Jackson Pollock (from 1950),
and two by Claude Monet

additionally, the four Painting highlights are:

It is a lovely sunny day - a beautiful day for a drive through the Pennsylvania countryside. Which is why I won't say how disappointed I am that the two pieces I wanted to see at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (Saint Francis University), Loretto, PA were both "not on display".

So on to Gettysburg. There is a sense of solemnity about the place/town/area


I bought Ellie a postcard, and a nice map for me. This Center is manned by volunteers, but everything associated with the Park Service (their map; battlefield roads for exploration) were closed because of the continuing Federal Government shutdown [I think the Lewis & Clark Park in St. Louis was closed when I decided not to visit it]


I checked in right at sunset!
And there is a Five Guys right around the corner!!!

Day Twenty-Six: Springfield, OH - Hocking Hills State Park, Logan, OH - Wheeling, WV

After all the rain of the past two days, a beautiful morning in Ohio


I found myself at Ash Cave trail at Hocking Hills State Park


Ash Cave is carved out of soft limestone, and is a HUGE area (see the small couple at the bottom of the picture to get a sense of scale!)


It was a beautiful morning for a hike


and then I found THE FIRE TOWER!

I then went around to another part of the State Park: Cedar Falls


I stopped in downtown Wheeling, West Virginia for a cup of coffee and to figure out where I was and where I was going. Good time today allowed me to check-in and get these blogs done!
