Upper Midwest - Day Seven (Phoenix, AZ - Joshua Tree National Park - Palm Springs Art Museum - Los Angeles, CA)

Go to LA TODAY!!

Start in Phoenix, AZ - 210 miles to the Joshua Tree National Park - 90 miles through the Park and then down to the Palm Springs Art Museum - then 120 miles: back up to 10W and all the way to Los Angeles. 420 miles total, and it took me 10 hours.

Most of the road in Arizona was gnarly

But it was GREAT getting to the Joshua Tree National Park!

there was Beautiful Desolation

There was a fun group bouldering

a Joshua Tree is a real tree, not one of those cactus-with-arms

beautiful rock formations

Palm Springs is a nice place out in the desert

The Museum is a good looking building

They have 3 sculpture pieces by Henry Moore, and a nice selection of western paintings, including William Keith (Donner Pass, c. 1895), Thomas Moran (Grand Canyon [Mist in the Canyon], 1915)

and Thomas Hill (Hunter and Setters in the Foothills with the Great Basin Beyond, 1871)

It was HOT in Palm Springs:

(it actually hit 95 on the highway going into LA)

After the Freeway trafffic, it was nice to cool off

and the city does look nice in the setting sun

Thank you God for getting me to the West Coast!

for this trip I am listening only to double-albums - let's see where that takes us

Dave Matthews Band - The Gorge (live recording, released 2004)

and because I’m coming up to the Joshua Tree National Park, I had to listen to
U2 - The Joshua Tree (regular & bonus cds) (released 1987/2007)

and because right above the National Park is Twentynine Palms, CA, I had to listen to Robert Plant - Fate of Nations (which contains the song “29 Palms”) and Dreamland (if you listen to two albums by the same artist, it counts as a double album)

U2 - All That You Can’t Leave Behind

coming into Los Angeles after Palm Springs:

LA Bands: Love, Byrds Greatest Hits, Beach Boys
