Friday, August 26, 2022 - A LOT OF COMPUTER WORK (they have great internet out here in Americxa), and left the Super 8 in Brookville, PA at 8:30 AM, with stops at 4 MUSEUMS: the Akron Art Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Springfield Museum of Art, and the Dayton Art Institute. Checked into the Super 8 in Plymouth, IN at 8:35 (just when the sun is going down, out here on the far-left end of the Eastern Time Zone) - 540 miles in 13 hours 50 minutes:
Fun room-key at Super 8:
I reached the Akron Art Museum at 11:15
They have a fun "Wall of American Artists":
Albert Bierstadt - "Landscape, Western Mountains", n.d. oil:
other art includes Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein:
Lunch at Wendy's (that "Wendy's", not my "Wendy's"), and the Columbus Museum of Art at 2 PM (with their Henry Moore out front):
They have 5 Monets:
Claude Monet - "Seascape at Pourville", 1882 oil:
And 2 paintings by Pablo Picasso:
"Boy with Cattle", 1906 oil:
"Female Nude (I Love Eva)", 1912 oil:
a nice Alexander Calder - "Intermediate Model for the Arch", 1975 steel:
Since I took this picture at 2:42, there is no way I can make my "next museum" 2 1/2 hours down the road (which closes at 4:30). I pulled up my app ("Where's the Art") and saw that the Springfield Museum of Art is 30 miutes away, and closes at 5 - so away we go!
Nice museum (I was here before for their Hudson River School artists), but none of their art was on display today. They had "local artists", for their Big Dinner this evening. So I pulled out my 2nd app ("Where's Claude Monet"), and saw that the Dayton Art Institute is an hour down the road, and open until 5. I got there at 4:30
Vincent van Gogh - "Champ aux Meules de Ble (Wheat Stack Field)", 1890 oil:
William Stanley Haseltine - "Porto Venere, Spezia, Italy", 1878 oil:
Albert Bierstadt - "Scene in Yosemite Valley", about 1864-74 oil:
Francesco Guardi - "The Torre Dell' Orologio (The Clock Tower), Venice", about 1760 oil:
Claude Monet - "Waterlilles", 1903 oil:
I left there right at 5, drove north, and crossed over into Indiana, which has a lot of corn fields and power towers:
15 minutes before I checked-in, at 8:35 PM:
Bed while watching a baseball game - Thank you God for this wonderful Art-Adventure Day!
Music for today - Last week I had ripped (just for the heck of it) a 10-cd set: Woodstock - Back to the Garden - 50th Anniversary Collection (2019):
Today I got through the last 3 cds. The Band was great.
12 Cellists Of The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - Cello Submarine, 1995:
Adiemus - Adiemus II: Cantata Mundi, 1996:
The Michael Stanley Band - Right Back At Ya' (1971-1983), 1983:
They are an Ohio-band. And Chrissie Hynde is from Ohio.
The Pretenders - Pretenders, 1979:
The Pretenders - Pretenders II, 1981:
And then it was time to listen to Indiana's Favorite Son - John Cougar Mellencamp:
John Cougar, 1979 debut album:
Scarecrow, 1985:

2022 Fall Trip - Day 1/42 - 8/25/2022
Thursday, August 25, 2022 - And away we go! I left Home at 5:55 AM, and checked into the Super 8 in Brookville, PA at 7:45 PM, with nice stops at The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center (Vassar College) and a "Scenic Highways & Byways": George W. Perkins Memorial Drive, with Perkins Memorial Tower at its summit - 588 miles in 13 hours 50 minutes:
I picked up David in Danvers, and we went down the HOV lane on 93 South, and were in Boston AT 6:50! Well, we had to do some loop-de-loops in Boston, and didn't get to The Breakfast too early. At 9 AM I was back at my car, and headed west out The Mass Pike. Then all the way down I-84, then a short jog up to Vassar College at 12:20
They have a lovely collection of small paintings by Hudson River School artists. Highlights include:
Frederic Edwin Church - "Autumn in North America", ca. 1856 oil:
George Inness - "Evening in the Meadows", ca. 1853 oil:
Jasper Cropsey - "Evening at Paestum", 1856 oil:
Sanford Robinson Gifford - "The Roman Campagna", 1859 oil:
And then time for their "other art":
Anders Lunde (Danish) - "Marina Piccola, Capri", 1847 oil:
Thorald Laessoe (Danish) - "View of the baths of Caracalla, Rome", 1852 oil:
Jackson Pollock - "Number 10, 1950", 1950 oil:
I like Jackson Pollock's "drip paintings", but I don't like the dark background. I would enjoy it more with a white background.
and then my favorite piece of "junk sculpture": Frank Stella - "Etang d'ambach,", 1992 stainless steel:
I bought a sub and ate it in air-conditioning - it is hot out there:
I crossed over The Hudson River:
to get to Perkins Memorial Drive/Perkins Memorial Tower/Bear Mountain Bridge scenic lookout:
(I'm trying to include a lot of the roads in my new favorite book:)
Very pretty drive:
and EXCELLENT VIEWS:
5-and-1/2-hours later I checked into the Super 8 in Brookville, PA - Thank you God for this wonderful Adventure Day! Good to get back out on The Road.
Music for today - Last week I had ripped (just for the heck of it) a 10-cd set: Woodstock - Back to the Garden - 50th Anniversary Collection (2019):
I got through the first 7 cds, plus a little of #8. A LOT OF JUNK, but a few gems: Ravi Shankar, John Sebastian, the Dead, CCR. And it turns out that today's route runs only 30 miles south of Bethel, NY, where they played 53 years ago!

2022 Fall Trip - Day 0/42 - 8/24/2022
I have been wanting to "bang out Colorado" for a few years now. During 2020 and 2021, Colorado was REALLY BIG (very lax COVID restrictions) - I'm hoping everybody has gotten "Colorado out of their system" - which leaves it wide-open for ME!!
I'll be seeing Museums on my way out to The Art Institue of Chicago, then continuing west to Rocky Mountain National Park. 12 days of driving-and-hiking in Colorado, then Wendy joins me for 9 days of sightseeing-and-hiking (and seeing friends and relatives). Mountain Passes and Rushing Rivers, Deep Canyons and Wonderful Waterfalls. Then back through Texas-New Orleans-Atlanta, and hiking in the Great Smokey Mountains. After getting that out of my system, I'll head home.
I'm leaving Thursday, Aug 25, Wendy will be joining me from Sunday, Sept. 11 (Denver, CO) through Monday, Sept. 19 (Albuquerque, NM), and I'll be home Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Should be fun - come along for the ride!

Crossover Blog (1/2) - Colby College Museum of Art
Sunday, July 17, 2022 - I'm hiking up in Northern Maine tomorrow, but today I'm visiting the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine. That allows me to write one of my favorite type of blogs: The Cross-Over Blog (modeled on the age-old tradition of comic book heros "crossing over" into each other's comic for an issue, then flip-flopping. Today is DixonHeadingWest (dealing with Art), and tomorrow is DixonHeadingNorth (dealing with hiking in this part of the world). This afternoon's drive:
Great start at Singing Beach this morning:
After church, lunch at home, then 3 hours up the road to Colby College Museum of Art:
In addition to their regular Excellent Collection, they have an Exhibition: Andrew Wyeth: Life and Death
I didn't like it - too morbid, too much "ghosts of reality", too many drawings. It is for a "real fan" only.
My favorites from their Permanent Collection:
Thomas Moran - "Morning, Outskirts of Venice", 1907 oil:
John Singer Sargent - "Rosina", 1878 oil:
Thomas Moran - "Acoma", 1902 oil:
Richard Estes - "Columbus Circle at Night", 2010 oil
Winslow Homer - "Girl in a Hammock", 1873 oil:
Frederic Edwin Church - "View from Olana in the Snow", c. 1871 oil:
Joseph Mozier - "Undine", c. 1866 marble
Winslow Homer - "The Trapper", 1870 oil:
Virgil Williams - "View of Katahdin from the West Branch of the Penobscot River", 1870 oil
Which is where I'll be tomorrow!
I left there a little before 5, and was up in Millinocket, Maine by 7 PM:
Well didn't that work out GREAT! Thank you God!
Music for today:
Brian McKnight - Back at One, 1999 fifth studio album
Excellent smooth soul.
Leonard Cohen - The Future, 1992 ninth studio album
Joe Jackson - Fast Forward, 2015 19th studio album
Joe Jackson - Tucker (soundtrack), 1988 ninth studio album
This is a bunch of 20's and 30's riffs, and can be deleted.
Joe Jackson - Mike's Murder, 1983 soundtrack album
Ok - I wanted to redeam Joe Jackson, and his soundtrack work. This is a wonderful album, recorded right after "Night and Day", but short (only 5 songs). And it is fairly obscure. I had the original record.
Joe Satriani, Yngwie J. Malmsteen & Steve Vai - G3 Live Rockin' In The Free World (cd 1), recorded 2003, released 2004
This cd will be deleted because is is just one loud guitar jam after another, and I don't know the original songs. Too many "Guitar Heros". HOWEVER, cd 2 is a definite keeper - 3 songs:
1 - "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" - 10:46
2 - "Little Wing" - 6:08
3 - "Rockin' in the Free World" (Neil Young) - 12:29.
