Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025 - I love being out here on The Road - 436 miles ending up at the Super 8, Chamberlain, SD:
A good breakfast for me this morning:
Microtel did a Good Job:
My first stop is only 7 miles north of the hotel - the Buddy Holly Crash Site. To quote Wikipedia: After a show in Clear Lake, Iowa (Feb. 3, 1959), Holly chartered an airplane to travel to his next show in Moorhead, Minnesota. Soon after takeoff, the plane crashed, killing Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and pilot Roger Peterson in a crash later referred to by Don McLean as "The Day the Music Died" in his song "American Pie".
I turned 6 on the day he died. He was not on my radar screen (I didn't have a radio or nothing), and I was busy with "Upper Kindergarten", but I certainly learned about him as the years went by.
I parked in the non-profit parking area, venmoed them $10, and took pictures - north, east, south, and west:
I headed west - the morning fog can get pretty intense out here:
This is how it looks on my iPhone - SO MANY POSSIBILITIES:
Pretty crossing over the East Fork of the Des Moines River:
I entered South Dakota at 11:45
Downtown Sioux Falls looks very nice:
I arrived at Touchmark at All Saints at 12:05 (for my noon appointment). It is the former All Saints School (an all-girls Episcopalian boarding school), but is now a retirement community. I met with Stacie, who showed me The Chapel with it's Tiffany Windows:
These are signs I don't see everyday:
Anybody need any spare parts?
Checked into Super 8, Chamberlain, SD just before 6 PM - 436 miles today (and 28 Post Offices):
This is what they looked like:
