Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018 - Art (
Berea College Museum of Art) and Exploration (
Cumberland Gap) = 484 miles driving:

I had a nice chat with a couple at breakfast. They were heading up to Ohio to see their grandchildren. When I told them my plans, the woman said she grew up near Cumberland Gap (Pineville), and the man reminded me about losing an hour with the Time Zone change just east of here.
It was a nice drive through
Kentucky, and I reached the
Doris Ullman Galleries (the Museum of Art at Berea College) a little after 10 AM:

I had stopped by Berea College a year ago, but their galleries were closed at that time. So this year I called ahead - YES, the Thomas Moran is up:
Thomas Moran - "The Cliff Dwellers", 1899

I was in stop-and-go traffic down I-75 South:

(Wendy showed me the "mirror trick".)
By 2 PM I was down at the
Cumberland Gap National Historic Park:

They have a great little Visitor Center:

After asking, I drove up the twisty-turny Skyland Road to
Pinnacle Overlook (Fort Lyon is above it):

Although the Fort Lyon site is higher, it has more trees around it. The Overlook is out by itself:

I then headed back the road to another parking area, and climbed up through the
Cumberland Gap:

Me and Daniel Boone:

There was a new/shorter/easier trail:

and an old/longer/harder trail:

All in all, a Great Little Adventure!
I headed out of the Park, and then up on US-119 North. It is a super twisty-turny road that goes up through Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia:

and it even goes through
Harlan County (where the show "Justified" is based):

It was not fun driving the last dozen miles in the dark to get to the Travelodge in
Comfort, West Virginia.
Thank you God for Art, and Nature, and for these Wonderful Adventures!
