New Zealand 2017 - Day 8: Maruia Falls, Lake Rotoiti, Queen Charlotte Sound

Thursday, Feb 23 - A long distance day today (made longer because of road construction), driving from Culverden up to the ferry in Picton (5 hours), then (3:40) ferry over to Wellington, then quick drive to Little Hutt:

A beautiful late-summer morning in New Zealand:

Mid-morning stop at Maruia Falls Scenic Reserve:

Then much road construction, which slowed our pace considerably. It was 12:30 when I was able to see Lake Rotoiti, which means I'm not going to make our 2:15 ferry (well, we will just have to see what God has in mind for us):

Beautiful day, with lots of people out hiking and enjoying the lakes.

Did not get to the ferry lot until 3:07, but I was able to get on the 6:45 standby (sounds awfully familiar, if you ask me!):

Things happen in "God's time" - an old beat-up van pulled up right behind us in line, and Wendy (and I a little) was able to have a long, deep talk with Jim, a former bushman/search-and-rescue operator guy/federal hunter who found Jesus in the middle of the bush many years ago. Despite his missing teeth and disheveled appearance and messy car, he has a towering faith and a gentle spirit - it was a privilege to meet and talk with him.

Wendy and I had some Subway subs for dinner while waiting, and then had a wonderful ferry ride from Picton out through Queen Charlotte Sound:

and I saw some dolphins swimming and jumping next to the ship!

After the channels, the ferry heads across Cook Strait to the North Island [according to Wikipedia, Cook Strait "is considered one of the most dangerous and unpredictable waters in the world"] (but it was night/dark, and didn't seem that "dangerous and unpredictable" - we'll see on our return (daylight) trip next Tuesday)

Landed at 10:15, and was able to make our way to the hotel - bed by 11. Thank you God for all your wonderful adventures today!
