Friday, Feb 17, 2017 - morning at the Christchurch Art Gallery, then visiting beaches:
A good day-trip - 222 kilometers
It is an "Art Day" today - the first stop is an 10 AM appointment with Tim Jones, Librarian, Christchurch Art Gallery in Christchurch for a look at their Turner and Piranesi etchings:
On my website, I have built pages/maps showing the location (worldwide) of artists I like. A couple of weeks ago I pulled up the one for JMW Turner
[link to webpage]
and zoomed-in on New Zealand
then click on the pin on Christchurch to see their JMW Turner prints
I went on their website and discovered that they actually have 2 etchings and 4 etching/engravings by Turner, plus 5 etchings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778, famous for his etchings).
The Gallery is an impressive structure!
Tim Clark met us a little after 10 and took us upstairs, and behind locked doors where they had set up the etchings:
(I LOVE getting "behind the scenes"!)
My favorites are:
JMW Turner - The Mildmay Sea Piece c. 1811 from his book of etchings "Liber Studiorum"
Giovanni Battista Piranesi - Interior view of the family tomb of Lucius Arruntius, 1756
We then drove an hour-and-a-half north, encountering misty rain. This overlooks the mouth of the Motuanu River (Motuanu Beach is around to the right):
and we made our way down to where the river meets the sea, for a view of Motuanu Island:
There was no place to have lunch, so we headed back down to the Fossil Point Cafe, through the hills:
then further back south to see Waikuku Beach:
It was a BEAUTIFUL beach, but a bit raw to go swimming, even with our NEW BEACH TOWELS.
On our way back to Sumner we stopped at the BIGGEST Supermarket in New Zealand (or so it seems), where I bought chocolate and chips, and Wendy bought "real food" for our hike around the Banks Peninsula. Back to the hotel, then dinner at Joe's across the street, then bedtime. Thank You God for these Great Days!
Music today - music from my green nano:
Van Morrison - The Best of Van Morrison Volume Two, 1993
It sounded so good, we listened through it twice.
Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band - The Dust Blows Forward, 1972
Captain Beefheart did "experimental rock" (protege of Frank Zappa), but he did some very nice songs (for a moment in time) on an album in 1972. These are from his anthology album.
Michael Franti & Spearhead - Everyone Deserves Music, 2003
Yes - Fragile, 1971
