3 Days in February 2023 - Day 3

Saturday, February 25, 2023 - Thursday Wendy started a 5-day retreat - which gives me a GREAT opportunity for a ROAD TRIP:
1,330 miles in 3 days - 11 museums!

Today (Day 3) I will be hitting 3 museums and covering 385 miles:

Crosstrek seems to have picked up a little dirt from the road:
After my Bible Study from 7:30 to 9, my first Post Office of the day is Clarks Summit, PA 18413:
I reached the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ just as it opened at 11
Thomas Moran - "Moonrise Over a River", 1895 oil:
a FUN "Wall-Of-Concert-Photos":
My walk around The Morris Museum:
I reached - Montclair Art Museum at noon:
It was nice seeing their George Inness Gallery:
My walk around The Museum:
Hey, where do you think I'm going to eat lunch in NEW JERSEY???:
FUN finding some Post Offices in New Jersey:
I went through the Lincoln Tunnel, and was driving in Manhattan right before my 2 PM SpotHero parking, just 2 blocks from my destination:
The Whitney Museum of American Art was packed on a Saturday afternoon:
I had purchased my on-line ticket a couple of weeks ago, which was GOOD because as I was entering The Museum, I overheard an employee tell a couple "Maybe tomorrow - we're Sold Out for Today".
The tail-wagging-this-dog is their wonderful Edward Hopper Exhibit - EDWARD HOPPER'S NEW YORK, which only goes through March 5:
I took pictures of 51 works (plus 6 sketches). The Whitney has done a wonderful job pulling together pieces from all over the country, from public-and-private collections, and from their own collection! I will start with Much-Better-versions of paintings I have seen elsewhere.

Edward Hopper - "Morning Sun", 1952 oil [Columbus Museum of Art, OH, Nov 9, 2014]
Edward Hopper - "New York Office", 1962 oil [Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, AL, Feb 27, 2015]:
Edward Hopper - "Drug Store", 1927 oil [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, April 18, 2019]:
Edward Hopper - "Room in Brooklyn", 1932 oil [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, April 18, 2019]:
Edward Hopper - "From Williamsburg Bridge", 1928 oil [The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Oct 8, 2019]:
and now a couple of pieces from Other Collections:

Edward Hopper - "Room in New York", 1932 oil [Sheldon Museum of Art, Univ. of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE]:
Edward Hopper - "Office at Night", 1940 oil [Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN]:
Pieces from The Whitney's own collection:

Edward Hopper - "Apartment Houses, East River", c. 1930 oil:
Edward Hopper - "City Roofs", 1932 oil:
Edward Hopper - "Night Shadows", 1921 etching:
While they did not have "Nighthawks" from The Art Institute of Chicago (maybe not "New York" enough?), they do have a wonderful set of Studies for Nighthawks:
Other Art in The Whitney Museum of American Art:

Georgia O'Keeffe - "Summer Days", 1936 oil:
Andrew Wyeth - "Winter Fields", 1942 tempera:
Jasper Johns - "Three Flags", 1958 encaustic:
Alexander Calder - "Big Red", 1959 painted sheet metal and steel wire:
Pretty Cool Views from the top floor:
Back to my car at 3:45 - Walking around The Museum (and the neighborhood):
As I'm going up the West Side Highway - WHAT IS THAT BUILDING??????:
I took pictures of Post Offices in Connecticut
and I got home at 8:00 PM. I splashed 4 buckets of Hot Water on the Crosstrek, which made my car "look normal". Thank You God for this GREAT Adventure/Art Day - 385 miles in 11 hours!!

Music for today - For this trip, I am listening to the physical cds that I have - an interesting bunch of discs I have accumulated over the years:

starting the day with jazz - Joey Calderazzo - Joey Calderazzo, 1999 7th solo album
Big Head Todd and The Monsters - Sister Sweetly, 1993 3rd album
various - Blues Brothers 2000, 1998 soundtrack album
GREAT ALBUM, with new version of Respect by Aretha, and burning songs by The Louisiana Gator Boys (a "blues supergroup" including Eric Clapton, Clarence Clemons, Bo Diddley, Dr. John, B.B. King, and Steve Winwood)

Jimmy Buffett - Banana Wind, 1996 20th album
Charles & Eddie - Duophonic, 1992 debut album
"Charles" is Charles Pettigrew. He studied jazz singing at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and was lead singer of the band Down Avenue, who won WBCN's 1985 Rock 'n Roll Rumble. Although this is not a "Down Avenue album", it does sound nice.

The Clash - London Calling, 1979 double album
There was a time there (Winter 1980) that The Clash was the most important band in the world. And this album is one of the greatest rock albums ever made. Just sayin'

various - Clueless 1995 soundtrack album:
A lot of fun, and it is the only place to get "The Ghost in You" by Counting Crows.

Bruce Cockburn - Big Circumstance, 1988 16th album
various - Cocktail, 1988 soundtrack album
Pretty cool album - tight songs by The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Georgia Satellites, and John Cougar Mellencamp
