Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019 - I really enjoy my trips with Wendy to NYC to see Auction House and Gallery exhibitions. Both Christie's and Sotheby's have their semi-annual (every 6 months) "American Art" auction now, and there are 48 pieces I would like to see:
We left the house at 7 AM. Stopped for gas-and-coffee in Connecticut. SpotHero parking, and a great lunch at Cafe Luca at 11:30
We finished lunch, and were out of there by 12:15, so we decided to just walk over to Christie's (in Rockefeller Center). MapMyWalk seems to have gotten a little strange, but you get the idea:
The first 2 pieces I took pictures of were the highlights for me. They were hanging in a conference/viewing room with no identifying information - the door just happened to be open:
2 beautiful pictures by Thomas Moran!
Other highlights at Christie's include:
Alfred Thompson Bricher - Low Tide, South Head, Grand Manan Island, n.d. oil:
John Kensett - Bash-Bish Falls, n.d. oil:
William Keith - The Headwaters of the Owens River, 1878 oil:
Winslow Homer - Schooners in Gloucester Harbor, 1880 gouache and pencil on paper:
Sanford Robinson Gifford - Mansfield Nose, 1859 oil:
Thomas Moran - View of Venice, 1919 oil:
Childe Hassam - Isle of Shoals, circa 1890 oil:
And the "big money-maker" of the auction:
Andrew Wyeth - Oliver's Cap, 1981 tempera
Note from the Future - these pieces sold for:
Lot 199 (online) - Alfred Thompson Bricher - Low Tide, South Head, Grand Manan Island - unsold
(estimate 50,000 - 70,000)

Lot 23 - Andrew Wyeth - Oliver's Cap - $2,415,000

You see that 3 of them are referred to as "online" - that is an additional auction that I was not aware of. Yet another reason to just keep poking around - you never know what you might discover!
We then took a cab back to York Avenue:

Audio today - Wendy started reading me a book she loved, and it sounds GREAT:
Robin Sloan - Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, 2013
When we weren't reading, we listened to 2 Bob Dylan double-cds:
Live 1962–1966
The Bootleg Series Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965–1966
