Washington, D.C. - Memorial Day Weekend Wedding

Saturday-Sunday-Monday, May 27-28-29, 2017 - A friend's son was getting married in DC on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, so Wendy and I drove down on Saturday:

Saw Museums (and the wedding!) on Sunday, and drove back on Monday:

To avoid the NYC area, I took 84 all the way into New York State - 1,066 miles round-trip, but traffic worked out great! (and dinner at FIVE GUYS both Saturday and Monday nights!!)

Tried to go to the Sunday morning 9 AM service at Saint John's Church, but due to a website mistake, they moved to their Summer Schedule this weekend - so we had our own Service!. Made our way down to the National Gallery of Art, but it didn't open until 11, so we got coffee nearby. I have previously visited the National Gallery of Art (April 28, 2014 and July 22, 2016 blogs), so here are some "new" paintings:

Francesco Guardi - Grand Canal with the Rialto Bridge, Venice, probably c. 1780

Bernardo Bellotto - The Campo di SS. Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, 1743/1747

Canaletto - Entrance to the Grand Canal from the Molo, Venice, 1742/1744

Claude Monet - The Artist's Garden at Vetheuil, 1880

Joseph Mallord William Turner - The Junction of the Thames and The Medway, 1807

Joseph Mallord William Turner - Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight, 1835

detail:

Thomas Cole - The Notch of the White Mountains (Crawford Notch), 1839

Albert Bierstadt - Lake Lucerne, 1858

Frederic Edwin Church - Niagara, 1857 (from the Corcoran Collection)

William Stanley Haseltine - Natural Arch at Capri, 1871

Childe Hassam - Allies Day, May 1917, 1917

and a special shout-out to our friends in Pride's Crossing; from the "East of the Mississippi: Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Photography" exhibition:
Samuel Masury - View of the Loring Estate at Pride's Crossing, Beverly, Massachusetts, c. 1857-1859

We had a very civilized lunch down in their cafe, and then walked a few blocks north to the Smithsonian American Art Museum. I have previously visited the Smithsonian American Art Museum (April 29, 2014 and July 22, 2016 blogs), so here are some "new" paintings:

I saw a wonderful selection of paintings (Duncanson, Whittredge, Moran, Bierstadt, Cropsey) in their "open storage" area (Luce Foundation Center, 3rd Floor), but they were behind glass and set back. The best is:
Thomas Moran - Fort George Island, Florida - 1878

Back in the Main Museum: Winslow Homer - High Cliff, Coast of Maine, 1894

The back to the hotel for rest, then off to the wedding:

the radiant mother-of-the-groom and mother-of-the-bride

and back to the hotel at a somewhat-reasonable hour.

Monday morning, I saw a REALLY COOL t-shirt when I went to pick up the car:

A couple of hours north to the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, known primarily for its Wyeth-family works. I have previously visited the Brandywine River Museum of Art (March 12, 2015 and April 29, 2016 blogs), so here are some "new" paintings:

Alfred Bricher - Low Tide, Cliff Island, Maine, n.d.

Jamie Wyeth Hekking House, 1968 watercolor (behind glass)

Jamie Wyeth Lime Bag, ca. 1964 (age 18)

N.C. Wyeth - April Rain, 1935

N.C. Wyeth - In the Crystal Depths, 1906

N.C. Wyeth - The Wreck of the "Covenant"
It was the spare yard I had got hold of, and I was amazed to see how far I had travelled from the brig
