Thursday, March 9 - Mount Cook hiking: Morning: Hooker Valley Track
The actual Track goes to the right at the top, so here is another map:
BEAUTIFUL mountain-top sunlight at 7:30 this morning:
The common room had a book about the geology of New Zealand, and there were two excellent illustrations:
Earthquakes in New Zealand (1990-1999):
(I would have added the count to the Magnitude ranges [for example, "7.0-7.9 (5)"])
Coastline and Glaciers, Present and 18,000 years ago:
After shower-shave-and-shine, and some breakfast, its off to the Hooker Valley Track:
There was NOT A CLOUD IN THE SKY:
It was great seeing the campers in the Park:
We started in shadows going up the Track:
But soon burst out into sunshine:
Yes, those are sheets of ice on Hooker Lake.
I scrambled along the east shore of the Lake, and got a better picture of the Hooker Glacier
The "black iceberg" and huge rockslide on the other side:
Looking back down at the viewing area:
can you see the hikers in the viewing area?
Back down at the viewing area, but "Where's Wendy?"
There she is!!
Heading back down - the sunshine made the rivers and mountains EXPLODE with BEAUTY!
Wendy walking with Masha from Russia:
I took a "Visitor Center photo" of our morning hike up to Hooker Lake, and then my afternoon hike up the side of Mt Sebastopol:
