Day Four: hiking at The Homestead

Wendy and I signed up for the Cascades Gorge hike, which assembled at 9:30 AM. We (6 of us, plus Brian the Guide) took a bus ride to the bottom of the Gorge. 3 miles long, up 370 feet in elevation, and saw 13 waterfalls, and rare wildflowers in bloom.

I learned that when a stream (like this one) has green growth on the rocks and the bottom, it is because it is spring-fed - constant temperature and flow. I also learned that I should never never never drink any water directly from any stream, no matter how clean "I think it is". In response to Wendy's question, however, it is perfectly safe to swim in the streams (parasites enter through the digestive system, not skin contact [even private parts]).

Although we both love the rushing water and waterfalls, Wendy also took many pictures of little flowers. If you like that sort of thing, please give her a call.

Back at the Homestead we had lunch at the Casino, and then Wendy went for a swim/dip in the "healing waters" of The Jefferson Pools. I had not gotten enough of "the great outdoors", so I went for a 4.6 mile hike up Deerlick Trail (830 elevation up to the ridge, and then back down):

The view from the hotel door right behind me - Casino lunch is the building down on the left, and the trail will go along the top of the far ridge

Near the ridge, looking back down the trail:

Turn around, and look up to the point:

Pretty nice view!!

Um, our guide Brian never said ANYTHING about dealing with BEARS! As I was going along the ridge, one crossed the path pretty far ahead of me and just flew through the woods. I thought that was all, but going down down the switchbacks, I saw Mom (black spot in the middle of the photo) with 2 little cubs making her way up the other side of the gorge (going AWAY from me).

I then saw 2 white-tail deer bound off into the woods, up the mountain.

And a beautiful end to the afternoon with a swim in the Main Pool:

Off to Natural Bridge, VA tomorrow, then up the Blue Ridge Parkway, and on into Charlottesville!

Day Three: Hershey, PA - Gettysburg National Military Park - Hot Springs, VA

303 miles driven today, 8 hours

The first stop today was Gettysburg National Military Park. As I have said before, the whole area has an appropriately somber vibe. There is respect for the fallen soldiers, and a huge amount of sadness regarding wasted lives, and the horror of war.

Round Top and Little Round Top look peaceful today, but they were the site of a blood bath 151 years ago, on July 2, 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Angle is a defensive line established by Gen. Meade, looking west

Four hours down to The Homestead, Hot Springs, VA (stopping for lunch in Smithsburg, MD)

not a cloud in the sky!

After sitting in a car all day, I got out and stretched my legs - 4 miles in one hour on the North Trail:

yes, there is still snow on their ski slopes!

the views were beautiful!

And, of course, the view at dinner was also GREAT!

Wednesday, April 23

The Band - The Band

then, because Wendy read me about U2 singing "Bad" at Live Aid in 1985
U2 - Wide Awake in America

The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon (greatest hits)

Bob Dylan - Desire

Sade - Diamond Life

Day Two: Mahwah, NJ - Princeton University Art Museum - Philadelphia Museum of Art - Woodmere Art Museum - Reading Public Museum - Hershey, PA

256 miles driven today, 9 1/2 hours

The first stop today, Princeton University Art Museum, has a wonderful representation of 15 artists in my app:

Albert Bierstadt (2)
Alfred Thompson Bricher (1)
Frederic Edwin Church (1)
Thomas Cole (2)
Jasper Cropsey (3)
Robert Scott Duncanson (1)
Asher B. Durand (2)
William Stanley Haseltine (1)
Winslow Homer (2)
John Kensett (3)
Claude Monet (3)
Thomas Moran (2)
William Trost Richards (3)
JMW Turner (1)
Worthington Whittredge (1)

My favorite at Princeton is Claude Monet's "Water Lillies and Japanese Bridge", 1899

One hour down to the Philadelphia Museum of Art:

Four beauties at the Philadelphia Museum of Art are:

Sanford Robinson Gifford - A Coming Storm, 1863

Fitz Henry Lane - Dana Beach, Manchester, 1860

Albert Bierstadt - Platte River, Nebraska, 1863

JMW Turner - The Burning of the Houses of Parliament, October 16, 1834

Artists Note: there are 11 Winslow Homer paintings, and at least 22 Monet paintings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

It was very nice to go out the North Entrance and take a picture of the Water Works and Boathouse Row (where I spent my college years)

30 minutes up to Woodmere Art Museum in the Germantown area of North Philadelphia. My favorite is Edmund Darch Lewis's "Morning in the Katterskill Clove", 1874

Lewis was a local Philadelphia artist, a "member of the Hudson River school", but I have only been able to locate about a dozen paintings in 8 locations across the country (CLICK HERE to get taken to the webpage

One hour west to the Reading Public Museum in Reading, PA. Although I have a Frederic Church and a Worthington Whittredge in my database, I discovered additional paintings by Jasper Cropsey, William Trost Richards, and N.C. Wyeth! What a nice little museum!
I think my two favorite things were Worthington Whittredge's "Trout Fishing in the Catskills" c. 1870s

and their DIORAMA! (Please Don't Feed The Animals)

One more hour west, checked into the Holiday Inn Express in Hershey, PA, then dinner 15 minutes away at one of our favorite places!!!
