Newport Art Museum (day-trip)

213 miles today/4 hours 15 minutes. I didn't get to the Newport Art Museum when Wendy and I went down to Rhode Island to see the Volvo Ocean Racing boats last Saturday, so I took a quick trip down after my Thursday Morning Mens Breakfast in Boston.

My timing was great, and I got down to Newport a little after 10. I was worried that a tour bus was unloading, and the museum would be jammed, but they were all going the other way ("Meet in the parking lot at 10 for the bus up to the three museums at Harvard") - dodged that bullet!

The Newport Art Museum has a very nice collection - an appropriate size for the space that houses it. There are paintings by John Kensett, Alfred T. Bricher, William Sonntag, a piece by Dale Chihuly, and a number of works (oils and watercolors) by William Trost Richards, who lived in Newport from 1874 until his death in 1905.

The best pieces are
William Trost Richards - Guernsey Cliffs, Channel Islands, 1899, oil

William Trost Richards - Paradise Valley, Middletown, Rhode Island, 1881, watercolor

Alfred T. Bricher - Women by the Shore, 1880, oil
looks like Singing Beach?

William Sonntag - Mountain and Mist in the Kanawha Valley, c.1860, oil

William Trost Richards - Off the South Shore, 1896, oil

Got home early afternoon - excellent little adventure! (BIG travels with Wendy next week!)

Listened to the big (160 gigs) iPod today:

T. Rex - Electric Warrior (19971)

Tears for Fears - Elemental (1993)

Van Morrison - Enlightenment (1990)
