Wednesday, January 28, 2026 - Up and at 'em. Nice breakfast in the hotel. The view from our room at 8:30
A map of the day ahead:
Walking past The Balmoral to get to our car:
8 miles southeast we stopped in Dalkeith for pharmacy and coffee:
Through Scottish countryside and over the River Tweed:
We were at Melrose Abbey at 10:45
"Seeing the Ruins of Ancient Abbeys" is actually a Very Good Reason to Visit Scotland. Although photos are wonderful, I get my inspiration from art - an 1831 engraving by David Roberts of "Melrose Abbey":
At the University of Edinburgh yesterday I took a photo:
It turns out to be an unknown artist, who painted from an etching by David Roberts. So I bought the etching on ebay! "Melrose Abbey, Roxburgshire", 1835:
The grounds of The Abbey (founded in 1136) are wonderful, especially in this rare sunlight:
We drove an hour west, and stopped at Findra in Innerleithen for a couple of sandwiches:
Driving through Scotland:
We arrived at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow at 3:30. They have a Turner and 2 Monets that I want to see:
J.M.W. Turner - "Modern Italy - The Pifferari", about 1838 oil:
Claude Monet - "View of Ventimiglia", 1884 oil:
Claude Monet - "Vétheuil", 1880 oil:
Gustave Doré - "Glen Massan", about 1873-74 oil:
The spaces are WONDERFUL:
That was a FUN hike:
Very pretty leaving Glasgow:
We arrived at Wyndham Duchally Country Estate, Gleneagles at 6 PM:
The view from our room (next morning):
We started out alone in The Dining Room, but were joined by another couple halfway through dinner:
Thank You God for this wonderful Scotland adventure (and driving safely on VERY NARROW ROADS)!
For listening, I just kept the car radio on "Smooth Scotland" - it dosen't take a lot of imagination to figure out what that is all about:
