Grand Canyon/Los Angeles - Day 3

Tuesday, November 14, 2017 - Today was the day we rented bikes to::

(pretty cool, huh?)

We started the day watching the rising sun blast the Canyon cliffs into gold:

After breakfast we had a 9 AM appointment with Colleen Hyde, Curator of the Grand Canyon National Park Museum Collection. We were able to see their 3 works by Thomas Moran:
an untitled oil from 1911:

a beautiful "Grand Canyon Scene at Eastern End of Canyon", 1920:

and a wonderful chromolithograph - "Grand Canyon of Arizona on the Santa Fe" (after 1912)

Since there is no gallery or exhibition space, it was an amazing privilege to be able to see these pieces!

From there we drove over to the Visitor Center:

While waiting for the bike rental to open, we walked to Mather Point Overlook:

We rode from the Visitor Center west through the Village, took a little bus ride up the beginning (steep uphill) part of Hermit Road, then had a Great Ride on Hermit Road along the South Rim:

Don't disturb the wildlife!:

Gotta LOVE the shoes!!

That is the Colorado River WAY DOWN THERE:

Had a sandwich at Hermit's Rest at the end of the road. My lunchtime view, sitting on a rock:

Don't take the bus yet - we will ride back for a while:

More beautiful views:

Then we hopped on a bus back to the Visitor Center/bike place.

In August 1873, Thomas Moran saw the Grand Canyon of the Colorado for the first time. His painting "The Chasm of the Colorado" (1873-1874, 84 3/8 x 144 3/4 in. [which equals 7 feet high by 12 feet wide!]) currently hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

That was enough for today - maybe next time for hiking Bright Angel Trail or South Kaibab Trail. THANK YOU GOD for this WONDERFUL ADVENTURE!
