August 2017 - Day 19 (Iowa to Indiana)

Tuesday, August 22, 2017 - Iowa to Indiana - 687 miles altogether:

This is a day to cover some ground, and see a couple of art museums. I left Percival, Iowa around 7:30, to make the 10 AM opening of the Spencer Museum of Art at The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas:

They have a wonderful little collection (being a University Museum). I had previously visited Oct. 4, 2013, and had been inspired by the art I saw (Winslow Homer, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Dale Chihuly), but was disappointed because almost all of the pieces I had hoped to see were not on display. I have since learned to "call ahead" to see if specific pieces are "available for viewing" (I figure that covers both "on display" and "back in storage, but we can pull them for you"). Although I had sent an email in July, I had not heard back, so I figured I was just going to take my chances. IMAGINE MY JOY when I was informed at the entry desk that the Curator was busy assembling the works I requested, and would I please go in and view the collections/galleries in the meantime!!

On-Display Collection Highlights include:

Albert Bierstadt - Sunset on the Plains, circa 1887 oil

Thomas Moran - The Morning After (Montauk, Long Island), 1891 oil

Thomas Cole - In the Simmental, Switzerland, 1843 oil

Sanford Robinson Gifford - Morning in the Adirondacks, 1867 oil

and it was WONDERFUL to see, IN KANSAS,
Thomas Hart Benton - Kansas Wheat Scene, 1953 oil

When I was through with the galleries, Assistant Curator Kate Meyer met me and escorted me to their Research Room (it was busy - a few other people were also doing projects), where she had assembled 8 pieces. 3 beautiful highlights are:

Winslow Homer - West India Divers, 1899 watercolor

Thomas Moran - The Great Salt Lake of Utah, 1874 chromolithigraph

Thomas Moran - The Castle of San Juan d'Ulla, Santa Cruz, Mexico, 1874 etching on silk

the "on silk" aspect makes it seem shimmery and alive.

On my way east through Missouri, I saw something very rare: cows of all different colors intermingled on a single field - black cows, brown cows, light tan cows. Maybe we all can get along!

160 miles east, I got to the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri (their "North Campus"):

Highlights of their 2nd-floor gallery are:

Jan van Goyen - River Scene with Ruined Tower, 1637 oil

Hubert Robert - The Hermit Frère Luce, probably before 1765 oil

attributed to Antonio Joli - Architectural Capriccio, 18th century oil

Albert Bierstadt - North Italian Landscape, ca. 1856-57 oil

Alfred Thompson Bricher - View of Cohasset, ca. 1868 oil

Another 1 hour 40 minutes gets me past Busch Stadium and The Arch:

on my way to check-in at the Super 8 in Corydon, Indiana at 9:15 PM:

I started today by listening to Terry Tempest Williams The Hour of Land 7/9, 2016:

It is a collection of very nicely written stories of some of our National Parks - both personal stories, and historical/scientific background. I like it (well, at least the first-through-seventh-cds-of-9). This section dealt with the Glen Canyon Institute, The Monkey Wrench Gang and the Red Rock Wilderness Act.

Music for today was more albums from my purple nano:

Chick Corea - Trio Music, Live in Europe, 1986

Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club, 1993

The Fabulous Thunderbirds - Tuff Enuff, 1986

Jamie Cullum - Twenty Zer05, 2004 live album

Jamie Cullum - Twentysomething, 2003

lyrics - "All at Sea":

I sleep by myself
I drink on my own
Don't speak to nobody
I gave away my phone.

Steely Dan - Two Against Nature, 2000 (their first studio album in 20 years, since 1980's Gaucho)

the Grateful Dead - Two From The Vault, 1992 (2 cds; recording of a 1968 concert)

Joe Jackson - Two Rainy Nights: Live in Seattle & Portland, 2002 live album

various artists - Ultra-fun xmas '03 epd mix, 2003

various artists - Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 5: Wild Cool & Swingin, 1996

various artists - Ultra-Lounge: Vegas Baby!, 2002
