Adirondack Waterfalls, Day 2-of-3

Tuesday, May 9, 2017 - Adirondack Waterfalls!

We left our Shelburne friends at 9 AM. It was a beautiful (cloudy) morning at the ferry landing:

and was clearing up as we made our way over to New York State:

After a nice visit with relatives Wally and Alice, we made our way up to Ausable Chasm. Although we weren't the "only people" there, it certainly seemed so:

Ausable Chasm is one of those "privately-owned" areas. Despite an initial reaction ("All Natural Resources should be PUBLIC!"), the admission fee they charge is used to take care of the area (fences, paths, overlooks), and the facility was nice and well-maintained:

There was a nice map, looking west/southwest, showing both Ausable Chasm (at the "bottom"), and the area for our next waterfalls (The Flume Fall and High Falls Gorge) up near Lake Placid:

And then we got to see the Ausable River rushing through the Chasm:

the geologic formation called "Elephant Head":

a nice view of the falls through the Route 9 bridge:

and the view from the bridge:

The power of the water rushing through the chasm is awesome:

Did you notice the worker on the cliff?

And I'm sure there is a great story concerning those red picnic tables at the bottom of the chasm: (they are tilted in the rubble)

We then headed 27 miles west to see the power of The Flume Fall:

Fun selfie with the Flume channel behind me:

The Flume Fall is right next to the road - in fact, the highway bridge goes right over the Ausable River at that point.

2 miles further - High Falls Gorge is another of those privately-owned properties, but it does provide employment in an area of few jobs.

A beautiful day looking upstream:

But then it gets exciting going downstream:

That lookout that Wendy is standing on (above) is the same one in the upper-right in the picture below:

Although it drains into a calm area:

it is quite a torrent back upstream!

20 miles south is Roaring Brook Falls:

Although it can been seen from Highway 73E, it is also a nice 10 minute hike in the Giant Mountain Wilderness Area:

closer

closest - up close and personal

It was less than 1 hour to get down to our hotel in Lake George. Out to dinner, and HGTV, and that's all for today! THANK YOU GOD for these wonderful adventure days!

Music for today was albums from my iPod:

The Kinks - Greatest Hits!, 1966

The Kinks - The Ultimate Collection, 2002

Paul Simon - One-Trick Pony, 1980
