Monday, May 13, 2024 - As April transitioned into May this year, I thought "Mmmh - I wonder if Sotheby's or Christie's have anything interesting coming up?" It turns out that Sotheby's has three auctions coming up:
Contemporary Day Auction on 14 May (Sam Francis)
Modern Evening Auction on 15 May (Monet [4], Hassam, Chagall, Sam Francis, Andrew Wyeth)
Modern Day Sale on 16 May (Boudin [3], Andrew Wyeth [2], Loiseau, Hassam)
Over at Christie's, they have:
20th Century Evening Sale on 16 May (Warhol, Van Gogh, Monet [2], Stella, Lichtenstein [2])
Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale on 18 May (Monet, Boudin [2], Metzinger)
Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale on 17 May (Sam Francis, Andy Warhol)
Private Sales (Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth)
They have overlapping "Viewing Dates", so Monday, May 13 is The Day for me!
I left the house at 6:15 AM. 128 traffic was ok, but the Mass Pike and I-84 were a breeze. On I-84 South at 8:17, I stopped by the side of the road and took a picture of my favorite view on my way to Hartford - Chapins Meadow Brook:
I wanted to grab a Post Office in Brewster, NY, which would allow me to take I-684 and the Saw Mill River Parkway down to The City. I was able to see East Branch Reservoir in Brewster at 9:49
My timing worked out perfectly for my 11:30 SpotHero parking reservation:
Always a pleasure visiting Sotheby's:
I like Eugène Boudin's "coastal paintings" - "Le Havre. Un Bassin", 1884 oil (estimate $70,000 - 90,000):
"Vue du Port d'Antibes. Le Quai, Le Matin", 1893 oil (estimate $60,000 - 80,000):
Gustave Loiseau - "La Brume au Cap Fréhel", 1906 oil (estimate $120,000 - 180,000):
and then it was time for some Monets:
"Antibes vue de la Salis", 1888 oil (estimate $12 mm - 18 mm):
"Meules à Giverny", 1893 oil (estimate upon request):
"Bennecourt", 1887 oil (estimate $6 mm - 8 mm):
"Vue de la Tour Montalban, Amsterdam", 1874 oil (estimate $4 mm - 6 mm):
Marc Chagall - "Bethsabée", 1965 oil (estimate $3 mm - 5 mm):
Andrew Wyeth - "Rum Runner (to the Westward)", 1944 tempera (estimate $3 mm - 5 mm):
I call this one "Woman in Peasant Dress and Boots examines $20 million automobile":
Back out on the Streets of New York City:
Down at Christie's I started with the Monets:
"Moulin de Limetz", 1888 oil (estimate $18 mm - 25 mm). I saw this painting last Sept. 9, 2023 out at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (read blog here). They are now de-accensioning it, and who knows when "the public" will ever see it again:
"Saint-Georges Majeur", 1908 oil (estimate $12 mm - 18 mm):
"Prairie à Giverny", 1886 oil (estimate $2 mm - 3 mm):
A nice pair of paintings by Eugène Boudin: "Le port de Trouville", 1894 oil (estimate $100,000 - 150,000):
"Trouville, Les jetées, marée haute", 1896 oil (estimate $50,000 - 70,000)
Other paintings I like:
Frank Stella - "Untitled (Concentric Squares)", 1974 alkyd on canvas (estimate $6 mm - 8 mm):
Roy Lichtenstein - "Modern Painting with Ionic Column", 1967 acrylic, oil and graphite (estimate $6 mm - 8 mm):
Jean Metzinger - "Dame au décolleté (Madame Metzinger)", c. 1910-12 oil (estimate $200,000 - 300,000):
Winslow Homer - "Surf Near Eastern Point", 1883 watercolor (Price upon request):
As a Pop Icon, it is comforting/pleasing/interesting to see that the spigot/well of Andy Warhol does not run dry. "Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn)", 1967 screenprint (estimate $3 mm - 5 mm):
and then it was time to head back down into the streets of New York and Get Out Of Town - the hikes in the Auction Houses do not look special, but I like the look of the whole 4.7-miles-in-2-and-1/2-hours:
I picked up my car at 2, and headed home (up 9 along the Hudson River all the way to I-84), grabbing Post Offices on the way. My 2 favorites (I like it when there is a sign on the building) this afternoon are:
