Sunday June 29 through Tuesday July 1, 2025 (blog 2/3) - Because Wendy's sister Cacci (and husband Ken) could not make it out to St. Louis for THE WEDDING, Wendy wanted to go down to North Carolina for a visit. I said "Great - I leave Thursday morning, and pick you up at the Raleigh-Durham Airport, late Saturday afternoon. We'll drive the 70 miles to Pinehurst, and be there for a lovely dinner." Wendy said "OK!":
TOTAL TRIP: 2,895 miles covering 10 States, 4 museums, 157 Post Offices in 34 New Counties
-------------------------
We spent nights 3, 4, and 5 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, enjoying friends and family (and breakfasts at Cracker Barrel!!!) - and church on Sunday:
My "working breakfast" Monday morning at Cracker Barrel - chocolate-chip pancakes, well-done bacon, black coffee:
On Monday, Wendy and I visited the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens:
Tuesday morning Wendy and I left bright and early to make our way over to The Biltmore Mansion in Asheville:
A pretty lovely day to visit a pretty lovely place (with a pretty lovely lady!):
It is nice to see their 2 Monets - Belle-Île, le chenal de Port-Goulphar, 1886 and Strada Romana a Bordighera, 1884:
I know what Wendy is interested in:
That was a fun MapMyWalk hike around The Mansion:
We then made our way down through The Gardens for a nice little lunch:
We checked into the Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate, and went downtown to look at The Cathedral of All Souls (Episcopal). Unfortunately it was damaged from The Floods and is closed:
So we went back to The Village Inn and hung out:
A lovely dinner brought this wonderful North-Carolina-adventure to a close. Thank you God for these GREAT Adventures!
Music for Tuesday July 1:
various - 20 Years Of Narada Piano (2 cds), 2001 compilation album, last heard 9/28/2015 - lovely to listen to while driving through the North Carolina morning:

Road Trip to North Carolina - blog 1/2
Thursday June 26 through Saturday June 28, 2025 (blog 1/2) - Because Wendy's sister Cacci (and husband Ken) could not make it out to St.
A nice road-trip the first 3 days, going south: 460 miles on Thursday, 442 miles on Friday, and 353 miles on Saturday.
But let's back-up one night, to Wednesday June 25, when I saw Counting Crows up Gilford, New Hampshire - WONDERFUL Show. I was far enough back that the sound was Just right (not too loud, not too soft):
By Thursday afternoon, I was having a great time grabbing Post Offices in the Susquehanna River Valley:
I ended as far west as Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, before heading to my Super 8 in Mifflinville (460 miles today):
-------------------------
Day 2 - Yesterday morning as I drove Bill Cross into our Thursday Men's Breakfast in Boston, I told him about my travel plans. He said: "You're going through Bloomsburg, PA? You have to stop at the Bloomsburg University Library - they have a couple of Tiffany stained-glass windows!!!" So that's how I started this morning - 8 miles west of my hotel (you can see the windows above the Library entrance):
"Truth and Virtue":
And then it was time to collect Post Offices in the Susquehanna River Valley, from 17821 - Danville, PA to 17751 - Mill Hall, PA. Highlights include - the shortest Freight Train I have ever seen:
I wanted to end this day going to The Fralin Museum of Art, UVA, Charlottesville, VA. They have Friday hours until 8 PM! I figured I would check my route/timing when I finished in Mill Hall, PA - it was 300 miles/5 hours to get down to Charlottesville, so no more goofing around! 5-and-1/2 hours later, I was at The Fralin:
Unfortunately, I liked only a single piece - Roman marble:
I checked into the Super 8 Charlottesville, VA a little after 8 (442 miles today):
-------------------------
Day 3 - After my Saturday Morning Bible Study, I hit the road, grabbing a quick look at my old Business School:
Some lovely countryside, making my way south through Virginia and North Carolina to the Raleigh-Durham Airport:
I collected 34 Post Offices today, ranging from the Humble (24539 - Crystal Hill, VA) to the Grand (24592 - South Boston, VA):
I picked-up Wendy at 6 PM, and 90 minutes later we were at Ken and Cacci's in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Thank you God for these GREAT Adventures:
