Wednesday, March 16, 2022 - It has been 2-and-1/2 years since I have been here, so today Wendy and I drove down to the New Britain Museum of American Art (New Britain, CT):
In addition to their Wonderful Collection, they are hosting an exhibition of paintings from the New-York Historical Society:
[only until May 22, 2022]
We left after breakfast, caught a little rush-hour traffic on 128, and arrived at 11:11 AM. Beauties from Their Collection include:
Thomas Moran - "The Wilds of Lake Superior", 1864 oil:
Albert Bierstadt - "Seal Rock", c. 1872-87 oil:
William Louis Sonntag - "A View in Vermont", c. 1874 oil:
Jasper Cropsey - "Lake Wawayanda, Sussex County, New Jersey", 1870 oil:
Martin Johnson Heade - "Ipswich Marshes", 1867 oil:
Frederic Edwin Church - "West Rock, New Haven", 1849 oil:
Rockwell Kent - "Toilers of the Sea (Toiling on the Sea)", 1907 oil:
which can be compared to the photo I took in 2015 with my "old phone":
And then it was time for the art from the New-York Historical Society:
I took photos of 21 pieces, and the highlights are:
John F. Kensett - "Seashore (Sunset on the Coast)", 1861 oil:
Albert Bierstadt - "Autumn Woods, Oneida County, State of New York", c. 1886 oil:
Thomas Cole - "Mountain Landscape", c. 1827 oil:
Asher B. Durand - "Study from Nature: Rocks and Trees", c. 1856 oil:
which can be compared with previous pictures I took in 2018:
and 2013:
Lastly, the Museum had an exhibition of "Cowboys, Detectives, and Daredevils: Pulp Art at the NBMAA" - my favorite is:
Walter Baumhofer - "Fighting Caballero" from Wild West Weekly: October 1941, 1941 oil:
We had a nice lunch in their cafe, and hit the road, Jack. WOW - Thank You God for this Wonderful Art-Adventure Day!
In addition to Wendy reading from "Wandering Home" by Bill McKibben (2005)
Music for today:
various artists - Guitarisma, 1997
various artists - Hard To Find 45s On [Disc 8]
Once upon a time, I ripped 4 songs from this cd:
"Last Song" by Edward Bear - I think this song was on the AM radio when I did my 1st cross-country trip in May/June 1972.
"Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas - I remember having fun with this song in the Penn Boathouse.
"Right Back Where We Started From" by Maxine Nightingale
"Driver's Seat" by Sniff 'n' The Tears - needless to say, a GREAT DRIVING song!
various artists - Hear Music Volume 2: Songs For Long Narrow Stretches, 2000
various artists - Hoot (soundtrack), 2006
a bunch of very nice Jimmy Buffett songs, including covers of "Wondering Where the Lions Are" and "Werewolves of London".
various artists - Hot Rods & Custom Classics, 21 songs culled from 1999 4-cd set
