Friday, Jan 29, 2016 - Wendy to Logan Airport, out to Vassar Art Museum, down to New York City, then up to the Super 8 in Rhode Island:
490 actual miles; left at 5:30 AM, Super 8 at 8:40 PM.
A close friend's Dad died in November, and his Memorial Service was at the Century Association (7 West 43rd St) this afternoon. Since I was dropping Wendy off at Logan for a few days in Florida with a girl friend, I knew I had some extra time for some Museums! I had visited the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College last July (link to blog) and I love their collection! In the past 6 months, however, I discovered a wonderful Thomas Cole painting "Prometheus Bound", ca. 1847. It is owned by the Catskill Public Library, but because of the cost of insurance, etc., they lend it to the Thomas Cole National Historic Site (Catskill, NY) when it is open (May-early November), and to the Loeb Art Center for the remainder of the year:
There were (at least a dozen) other beautiful pictures, but they were already highlighted in my July 1, 2015 blog. So then south into New York City, to my parking garage at 116 West 44th Street. A nice walk through mid-town Manhattan:
The sidewalks were pretty clear, but some snow was piled up. Unfortunately, The Morgan Library & Museum did not have any of their JMW Turner's on display; I did get to see the Gutenberg Bible:
I walked back uptown, bought a charger cable at the new Apple Store in Grand Central Station, and got to the Museum of Modern Art on West 53rd Street, where I saw a few BEAUTIFUL MASTERPIECES:
Vincent van Gogh - The Starry Night, 1889
Pablo Picasso - "Ma Jolie", 1911-1912
Claude Monet - Water Lilies, 1914-1926 (single panel)
Claude Monet - Agapanthus, 1914-1926
Claude Monet - Water Lilies, 1914-1926 (three panels)
Andrew Wyeth - Christina's World, 1948
the Museum acquired it from Macbeth Gallery in NYC for $1,800
Jackson Pollock - One: Number 31, 1950, 1950
leaving the MoMA, I passed St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue - always a wonderful place!
After the Memorial Service, I got out-of-town at 5. With traffic, it took me 3 and 1/2 hours to get to the Super 8 in Rhode Island (AMC Annual Summit in Norwood, Mass. tomorrow!) - Thank You God for a Great Day!
